CHICAGO DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION

DIVISION OF IN-HOUSE CONSTRUCTION

Starting Salary: PR, $12,221.73/month

This position is open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with MID-AMERICA CARPENTERS REGIONAL COUNCIL (BU 50). Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Functions as a senior-level manager, directing work operations of a large staff of skilled trades and craft personnel in various disciplines, and managing large scale construction projects and activities relating to the maintenance of City building structures and facilities and transportation infrastructure

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

• Positions in the Department of Transportation work with senior managers in planning, scheduling and managing large-scale projects relating to the city's infrastructure including the repair and maintenance and construction of streets, sidewalks, bridges and viaducts

• Directs a large work force of skilled trades across various disciplines including carpenters, plumbers, bricklayers, and cement finishers through the direct supervision of Foreman

• Directs construction projects relating to the reconstruction of sidewalks, ensuring proper construction methods and work procedures are followed, needed materials are requisitioned and delivered to sites, required permits are obtained, and appropriate utilities are notified

• Oversees bridge maintenance and repair work, coordinating the work of various trades including ironworkers, electricians, and machinists

• Directs the day-to-day operations of residential street and alley asphalt resurfacing projects, directing administrative staff in the scheduling of projects and the work of skilled trades and laborers assigned to projects and jobs

Additional duties may be required for this position.

Days: MONDAY-FRIDAY

Hours: 7 :00am-3:30pm

THIS POSITION IS IN THE CAREER SERVICE

Qualifications

• Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered Carpentry apprenticeship training program and journey-level status, plus six (6) years of journey-level carpentry experience, of which three (3) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position; OR

Should the above criteria not be fulfilled, the following options are available:

• Successful completion of an industry or company sponsored apprenticeship training program in carpentry, PLUS eight (8) years of journey-level work experience as a Carpenter in the construction industry, of which three (3) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position OR

• Graduation from an accredited college with an Associate's degree or higher in Construction Management, Construction Technology, Civil Engineering, or a directly related field, PLUS six (6) years of work experience as a Carpenter in the construction industry, of which three (3) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position OR

• Ten (10) years of work experience in the construction industry as a journey-level Carpenter, of which three (3) years are in a supervisory role related to the responsibilities of the position

• A valid State of Illinois driver's license is required

• Working knowledge of Microsoft Project and Microsoft Excel software highly desirable
