About the Role
Join our team! The City of Kentwood is seeking a Building Inspector to support our Inspections Department. In this role, you’ll help ensure that residential, commercial, and industrial construction projects meet applicable building codes and safety standards, protecting the health, safety, and welfare of our community.
You’ll perform a variety of inspection and compliance duties, from reviewing construction plans to conducting on-site inspections and working with contractors, developers, and property owners. This position is ideal for someone with a strong background in the building trades who enjoys problem-solving, working in the field, and contributing to safe, high-quality development.
About the Inspections Department
The City of Kentwood’s Inspections Department serves as a resource for the community to assist with construction projects. From home projects to business renovations, the department provides residents and businesses with the information needed to successfully complete construction projects and transform their space.
By regulating building construction, alteration, repair and equipment installation to ensure compliance with construction codes and other related rules and regulations, the department helps protect the health, safety and welfare of visitors and residents.
The department performs plan reviews, issues permits and conducts building inspections, as well as electrical, mechanical and plumbing inspections. The City also conducts rental inspections as part of its rental property oversight program.
What You’ll Do
- Inspect residential, commercial, and industrial construction for compliance with building codes and approved plans
- Review plans and specifications to support inspection activities
- Identify code violations and ensure corrective actions are taken
- Investigate complaints and evaluate unsafe or hazardous conditions
- Provide guidance to contractors, developers, and property owners on code requirements
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, findings, and enforcement actions
- Prepare reports, notices, and correspondence related to inspections and violations
- Support enforcement actions, including documentation and court testimony when necessary
- Travel to job sites to perform inspections
- Provide professional, courteous service to the public and internal teams
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED
- Completion of an apprenticeship in a building trade and three (3) years of journey-level experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience)
- Valid Michigan Driver’s License
- State of Michigan Building Inspector License
- Strong knowledge of building codes, construction methods, and materials
- Ability to read and interpret plans and technical documents
- Strong communication, organization, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in both office and field environments, including active construction sites

Pay and Benefits
Hourly pay range: $32.00 - $40.87, dependent on qualifications and experience
