Company Overview

Care Free Medical is a 501(c)3 nonprofit clinic located in Lansing, MI. We are a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) that provides high-quality and compassionate health care to low-income, underinsured, and uninsured adults and children from across Mid-Michigan -- from birth through old age.

Company History

2004 was supposed to be the year he retired. After working for 28 years as a community-oriented physician, Barry Saltman, M.D. was 67 years old and looking forward to spending time “up-north” at his dream home in Northern Michigan with his wife, Suzanne. After serving the community honorably for 28 years at his practice in Mason, and after being diagnosed with a rare type of blood cancer, Waldenstrom’s macroglobulinemia, Dr. Saltman grew increasingly concerned about people who didn’t have access to the kind of care he received to treat his cancer. With precious few clinics in the region willing to see uninsured patients, Dr. Saltman quickly decided the dream home could wait and that he would see as many uninsured patients as he could. Care Free Medical was born.

Dr. Saltman labored tirelessly in his old age, pushing his body to the limit to serve the underserved. His energy and persistence were contagious. As he worked to raise money for his new clinic, very few people could say no when he came asking for support. As a result, Care Free grew larger than he ever dreamed it would.

In 2007, a second-year medical student named Farhan Bhatti started volunteering at Care Free once weekly. After six months, Dr. Saltman and Farhan's relationship turned into a grandfather-grandson relationship. Before he completed his second year of medical student, Dr. Saltman approached Farhan and said, "I'm not going to be around forever. How would you like to take over this place when you finish your training?" Farhan said yes and both men kept their commitment to each other. Upon completing his family medicine residency in June 2015, Dr. Bhatti started as CEO and Medical Director of Care Free.

Care Free has grown a lot in the last 10 years -- to the extent that the building we currently lease is more than 3X the square footage of our 2015 location. We provide over 12,000 visits annually. We were designated a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in September 2024 after years of hard work and preparation to meet all the eligibility criteria and implement all the required policies and procedures.

Benefits

As a FQHC and a non-profit clinic, physicians can pursue loan forgiveness Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.
