POSITION DESCRIPTION:
POSTING FOR SRS BARGAINING UNIT MEMBERS ONLY
Prepares and paints vans, trailers, fixtures, instrumentation mounts, and various electronic and optical components. Logs use of all controlled media as defined by facility, state, and federal environmental regulations. May be requested to assist in planning work; which could include estimating job costs and selection of materials. Able to survey items to be painted to determine repairs needed and to assist in developing schedules for completion. Responsible for the proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies. Work involves the following: knowledge of paint application and preparation of base materials, which includes but is not limited to, aluminum, steel, and fiber-reinforced plastics. This includes the knowledge of surface peculiarities and types of compatible coatings; surface preparation including sanding; media blasting; chemical stripping; and surface conversion and treatment. Must also be skilled in wood surface preparation, staining, and/or sealing techniques. Knowledge of proper mixing and application of single and multiple stage isocyanate topcoats and under coatings is also required. Must be proficient in the application of coatings with spray equipment which includes the following; conventional, High Volume Low Pressure (HVLP), airless and electrostatic methods. Performs fiber reinforced plastic structural fabrication and repair including fabrication of replacement core materials, lay-up with epoxy resins, polyester resins, and Tedlar films. Must have the ability to use hand and power tools applicable to trade.
Has the ability to read, understand, and follow safety procedures. May perform evaluations of new painting processes to assure compliance with all environmental and safety regulations. May be assigned other duties within his or her capabilities. May be required to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications. Work may be reviewed by supervisor for general compliance with accepted practices. May assist in training and will provide technical guidance to lower level technicians.
Work will include associated cross-utilization into other jobs as required. May require some overtime and weekend work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Must have demonstrated satisfactory skills and good performance in addition to graduation from a two-year resident course at a technical institution with three years progressive experience in the specific field or a total of six years of progressive experience in the specific field. Must have a working knowledge of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), New Mexico Environmental Department (NMED), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) regulations. Applicant selected may be subject to a security investigation and must meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information. Must possess a valid driver's license, and be able to obtain a military drivers license.
