The City of Thousand Oaks has an excellent opportunity for a Combination Building Inspector I/II!
This position may be filled as Combination Building Inspector I ($80,590 - $107,999 annually) or Combination Building Inspector II ($88,957 - $119,211 annually), depending on candidate experience and qualifications.
The Combination Building Inspector I/II plays a crucial role in protecting public health, safety, and welfare by reviewing construction projects to ensure compliance with minimum standards. Their inspections cover not only the structural stability of buildings but also key safety aspects such as fire protection, life-safety features, energy efficiency, and the proper functioning of plumbing, mechanical, and electrical systems.
The Combination Building Inspector must possess excellent customer service and communication skills, be self-motivated, exercise discretion and independent judgment, and project a very professional image through in-person, phone, and e-mail interactions at all times. Additionally, this position will plan check in specialized areas such as plumbing, mechanical, and electrical.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conducts inspection work to enforce building, fire and life safety, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, energy, accessibility, and other related codes and regulations that govern the construction, alteration, repair, and use of buildings and structures.
- Reads and interprets plans and specifications for inspection on commercial, industrial and residential buildings. Performs pre-construction inspections on complex permits to get familiarized with the project milestones and establish communication channels with the contractor and the design team.
- Participates in the development of policies and procedures; recommends programs and projects to the inspector supervisor and the inspection team.
- Ensures a high-performance, customer service-oriented work environment that supports the department and City’s mission, objectives, and values.
- Confers and coordinates with, and provides information and assistance to owners, architects, engineers, contractors, builders, and the general public in the field and office; explains and interprets applicable codes, ordinances, and zoning regulations.
Requirements
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE SHOULD POSSESS:
- Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent, supplemented by specialized training in building technology, architecture, engineering, or a related field; a college degree is preferred.
- Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills to interface with the public and colleagues.
- Knowledge of the permitting process for construction.
- Ability to read construction drawings.
- Certification as a Plans Examiner is highly desirable.
- One or more years of experience as a plans examiner is preferred.
- Experience with Microsoft Windows and Office suites.
- A valid Class C California driver's license
LEVEL I
Two years of experience as a journey-level craft worker in the building trades.
LEVEL II
Two or more years of building inspection experience comparable to that of a Combination Building Inspector I with the City of Thousand Oaks.
Certification from the Association of Electrical Inspectors, the International Association of Plumbing and Mechanical Officials, or the International Code Council is preferred.
