Description
The primary function of the job is to direct, manage, supervise, and coordinate activities and operation of the Building Inspection Department, including building inspection and enforcement of state laws, codes, and local ordinances dealing with the construction of new buildings and the alteration, use, and ongoing safety of existing buildings. Coordinates assigned activities with other divisions, departments, and outside agencies; and provided highly responsible and complex administrative support. Employees must meet the minimum requirements, conditions of employment, and be able to perform successfully all essential duties and responsibilities with or without reasonable accommodation.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Responsible for meeting all state and locally mandated code compliance and reporting requirements.
Apply knowledge of building codes, policies, and procedures to the day-to-day functions of the building department.
Serve as the primary liaison with our clients in this area and is responsible for ensuring that we deliver the highest level of customer service
Responsible for attending department and community meetings as required.
Perform plan reviews both commercial and residential in all trades.
Perform inspections as needed.
Supervise building department staff.
Maintains comprehensive records of applications, permits, inspections, and other related documents.
Responds to public inquiries and complaints, educates the community on codes, and represents the department at meetings.
Requirements
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS:
Be able to demonstrate extensive knowledge of local building code regulations, policies and procedures
Have solid computer skills and experience using MS Office programs
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Exercise initiative and display independent judgment
Be self-directed and self-motivated
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE:
ICC Building Official certification required
ICC Inspector certifications in multiple trades
Client and team management experience in a building department setting
Inspection and Plan review experience for commercial and residential structures
Maintain the required number of CEU’s as directed by the State of SC and ICC.
Five (5) years of supervisory experience in a municipal building inspections department. Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above minimum qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements
