- Building Inspector
Description
Under the supervision of the Building Official, this position performs building inspections and related office work necessary to ensure compliance with housing, building, zoning, and other ordinances enforced through the Building Department. The work involves responsibility for inspecting new and existing residential and commercial structures and reviewing construction documents for compliance with applicable codes and ordinances related to health, safety, and welfare.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Inspects buildings and structures to verify or gain compliance with health, safety, and welfare standards as specified by applicable codes.
Reviews construction documents to ensure conformance with building codes and city ordinances.
Issues instructions and correction notices to property owners and contractors for resolving code violations.
Maintains accurate records and prepares reports related to inspection activities and code compliance.
Interprets specific codes, inspects properties, and, when necessary, issues violations and court appearance tickets.
Works in conjunction with the City Attorney in the preparation of court cases and may serve as an expert witness.
Responds to general information requests and performs necessary office work to support department operations.
Performs other related duties as required.
Requirements
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional training or certification in construction, engineering, or a related field is preferred.
- Must possess a valid State of Michigan certification as a Building Inspector and Plan Reviewer OR have a provisional registration by the State of Michigan as a Building Inspector and Plan Reviewer within 90 days of appointment and full registration within three years of appointment.
- Must possess a valid State of Michigan driver’s license.
- Minimum of four years of progressively responsible experience in building inspection, construction, or code enforcement.
- Extensive knowledge of building construction methods, materials, and best practices.
- Proven ability to lead, supervise, and maintain effective working relationships with departmental personnel.
- Strong interpersonal skills for interacting with contractors, architects, design professionals, developers, and the public.
- Proficient in interpreting and applying building and zoning codes, as well as state and local laws and ordinances.
- Able to clearly and effectively communicate code requirements and inspection findings, both verbally and in writing.
- Skilled in identifying structural issues and code violations, and capable of recognizing hazardous conditions.
- Competent in reading construction documents and recognizing deviations during construction.
- Strategic thinker with the ability to develop long-term departmental goals and assist with policy formulation.
- Proficiency in using computers and relevant software applications.
