Facilities Management at UVA is now accepting applications for our highly regarded Apprentice Program.
The University of Virginia's Apprentice Program began in 1982 and was the first Apprentice Program started by a state agency. This unique opportunity provides an opportunity to learn a trade while working as a full-time employee at UVA. Apprenticeships are full-time, paid positions with U.Va. benefits. Apprentices learn their selected trade through a combination of on-the-job training, technical education and classroom instruction over a four-year training period. This training is fully paid for by the University of Virginia.
The Plumber Apprentice will be trained through the apprenticeship program to become skilled and licensed as a plumber in the maintenance, repair, and new construction of equipment, systems, and piping; building domestic water, chilled water, and steam/heating hot water, storm, and sanitary sewer equipment, systems, and piping; and distribution piping systems and equipment. Training will consist of rotations throughout the department to provide broad range of skills to support the construction and maintenance needs to the University.
While working around machinery, Plumber Apprentices will be exposed to noise, odors, and fumes. They will also be exposed to blood/body fluids due to stopped up commodes and they will work with ceiling pipes. They will be required to stand on different surfaces depending on location of job being performed. This employee will also be exposed to different positions depending on the job being performed. They will work with materials of different weights and perform repetitive motions.
Online Applications for this year's Apprentice positions will be accepted from March 31 through midnight on April 23, 2017. The candidates selected for hire will start work in August 2017. Applicants must be at least 18 years' old and possess a high school diploma or GED by the start date in August.
This year, we are recruiting for Plumbing, Electrical, Carpentry and HVAC. Applicants should apply to each posting for any/all trades they are interested in.

Some - up to 4 years
Preferred Specific Experience:
Summer or after schoolwork in the HVAC, plumbing, electrical, general construction, or related area is preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
1. An aptitude in working with building trades as demonstrated through high school shop classes, summer or after school jobs or similar work.
2. An aptitude for good classroom performance as demonstrated through high school or post high school performance.
3. Good communication skills.
