The Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University seeks a detail-oriented Arts Technician to assist Exhibitions Coordinator with hands-on preparations of exhibitions including:
- installation and de-installation of artworks and other exhibition materials;
- art handling with the safety and archival preservation of the artwork in mind;
- performing gallery maintenance;
- painting walls and pedestals for new installations;
- keeping tool room organized and safe;
- operating and trouble-shooting audio-visual equipment, DLP projectors, computers, bucket-lift and other equipment;
- any other duties assigned by Exhibitions Coordinator.
The gallery contains 7000 sq ft of exhibition space and is located in the Purnell Center for the Arts on the Pittsburgh campus. See millergallery.cfa.cmu.edu for more information about the gallery.
Requires self-motivated, dedicated individual with excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability follow instruction and to work both independently and as a team and collaborate effectively hands-on with creative artists, curators, students, faculty, administrators and the general public; ability to work well under pressure, with frequent changes and interruptions, and to meet inflexible deadlines; ability to pay attention to detail while maintaining a broad perspective; ability to remain calm when dealing with difficult situations or individuals; ability to prioritize effectively and creatively problem-solve.
Technical A/V, video editing, proficiency with Mac and PC, extensive knowledge of computer operation and basic digital photography; experience with Google Drive and Calendar, Sketchup and Microsoft Office Suite
Construction basic carpentry, building projection rooms, walls, pedestals and other exhibition apparatus; proficiency with power tools (table saw, chop saw, framing saw, etc); comfort using ladders and bucket lift, working at 20ft. heights;
Organizational: experience in gallery setting, art handling, making labels and mounts; familiarity with registration methods including condition reports, experience crating, packing and shipping of artworks.
Experience with events, event documentation with video/photography, tours and art education, marketing distribution, social media, writing and proofing a plus.
Extremely mobile; requires frequent lifting and moving of artwork, art displays and equipment; Requires operation of hand tools (hammers, saws, etc.), power tools (drills, sanders, etc.), comfort working on ladders and equipment such as hydraulic-lift for extended periods of time; frequent lifting of approx. 50 lbs.
Must be available to work varying schedules depending on the Gallery's exhibition schedule and be available some weekend and evening hours as needed.
- High School Diploma or GED
- At least 1 year of relevant work experience
