Ensure that customers/users use materials and equipment in a safe and appropriate manner: • Monitor faculty, students, and staff to ensure that materials and tools are used in a safe and appropriate manner. • On an ad hoc basis, verify that shop users have appropriately signed in to use the shop facilities and completed the necessary safety training. • Assist with shop safety, materials, and specialty equipment use training program.
Provide advice to customers/users concerning design and fabrication: • Use knowledge of shop practices and carpentry principles to assist with design and fabrication projects. • Suggest design changes and/or appropriate tools or techniques to solve design/fabrication problems.
Maintain shop model making equipment and machinery: • Inventory parts, supplies and equipment to ensure that parts continue to be available. • Recommend machinery for upgrades and replacement. • Update records regarding issues with equipment. • Maintain adherence to EH&S compliance rules and regulations.
Miscellaneous duties: • Assist with small fabrication and installation projects. • Attend training as required to maintain or expand skills. • May serve as a work leader for 1-2 student employees.*********This is a variable part-time, temporary position not to exceed 43% per month************* ************************Must be available for day, evening and weekend shifts***********************
Journeyman level skills and experience relating to the use and maintenance of carpentry and shop working equipment and concrete, paint, and other materials used in fabrications; using CAD/CAM, shop hand held and power equipment and tools (e.g., sanders, saws, benders, drill presses, rollers, buffers, welders, lathes, cement mixers, sandblasting cabinet, punch, router, CNC router, jointer, planer, laser cutters, 3D printers). • Strong interpersonal skills including sensitivity, tact and diplomacy to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff. • Solid abilities to consult and advise on instructional/research design/construction experiments and furniture pieces. • Demonstrates ability to read, write and follow oral/written instructions provided in English. • Incumbent must possess a high level of motivation and initiative. Must be willing to support and actively contribute to a highly collaborative team environment, with a proper customer-service attitude and active, appropriate communication to the customer and supervisor. • Availability on weekends, holidays and emergencies. • Must be able to access work sites including heights, confined spaces; walk and stand for extended periods. • Ability to lift 75 pounds. • Certified Red Cross first aid and CPR training or the ability to achieve certification within the first three months of employment.
