This position is required to perform general tasks and duties associated with the carpentry trade. Tasks include, but are not limited to: the skills and knowledge to properly and safely use and operate the associated powered or hand tools of the trade, general maintenance, repair, replacement, fabrication, installation, alteration, the ability to read and interpret construction blueprints and detailed job descriptions, ability to create a materials take-off list and complete purchase requisitions for needed materials, the ability to complete purchase requisitions for other purchases (i.e., tools and tool accessories as necessary), and the application of skills in planning, problem-solving, attention to detail, teamwork, communication and adherence to safety.
Education and Experience:
High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work. Optional Guidelines: Experience in the trade(s) areas related to the area of assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis.
Perform repairs/replacements to a wide variety of building components to include: windows, all types of doors, flooring, building hardware, acoustical ceiling tile and grid work, sheet rock repairs, cabinets, counter tops, moldings, etc. Perform installations for small projects to include construction of walls, doors and hardware, lay-out and install acoustical ceiling grid work and tiles, install cabinets from sketches and verbal instructions, installation of floor tile, and hang sheet rock. Match existing colors for painting from touch-ups to whole rooms. Finish sheet rock when necessary. Assist with other trades as requested, such as sheet metal, insulation, plumbers, electricians, etc.Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of mandatory University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions, including but not limited to a public health emergency, require the University to close.
At least 5 years’ experience in carpentry. Familiarity working in a University setting. Knowledge of UNC campus buildings.
