This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Trades/Maintenance Worker 2 position for the Hatfield Marine Science Center at Oregon State University (OSU).
The Hatfield Marine Science Center (HMSC) is Oregon State University's campus for research, education, and outreach in marine and coastal sciences. Through its partnerships, HMSC improves scientific understanding of marine systems, coastal processes and resources, and applies this knowledge to social, economic, and environmental issues.
The Hatfield Marine Science Center has more than 50 years of accomplishment in research, education, and outreach. Originally established as a marine laboratory for Oregon State University, it has grown to encompass a large group of partners on its 49 acre site on Yaquina Bay in Newport, Oregon. Within OSU, HMSC includes researchers, students, or faculty from five colleges. It serves as home to several University programs, including the Coastal Oregon Marine Experiment Station, the Cooperative Institute for Marine Resources Studies, and the Marine Mammal Institute. It also includes important components of the Oregon Sea Grant program, Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center and the National Oceanic Atmospheric Association.
The Trades/Maintenance Worker II is a member of the HMSC Facilities team. HMSC Facilities is a service- based group responsible for the operation and maintenance of OSU and NOAA buildings and seawater systems at HMSC. As a member of HMSC Facilities, the person in this position will interact with students, researchers, staff and faculty with a goal of positive customer service. Primary responsibilities of this position may include the operation of the seawater systems and related equipment and will include all other general maintenance at HMSC under the guidance of the Facilities Manager and the Trades Maintenance Coordinator.
This position will be located in Newport, Oregon.
Minimum Qualifications (Staff) / Guidelines (Faculty):
Three years of general building maintenance experience in one or more of the following trade areas: carpentry, electrical, mechanical, painting, plumbing, and welding. NOTE: Some positions may require licensure or certification in a specific trade area.
Posses the ability to communicate clearly and effectively through written, oral and electronic methods, including email correspondence.
Demonstrated ability to provide customer service, comfort, support and courteous customer interaction.
Demonstrated ability to work successfully in both individually and in a team environment.
Demonstrated ability to work and manage time in a fast-paced, rapidly-changing environment while performing and transitioning between varied tasks.
This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions.
This position requires driving a university vehicle or a personal vehicle on behalf of the university; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per University Policy 05-030.
Must possess a Confined Space Certification permit or the ability to obtain permit within six months of hire date.
Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 lbs.
Ability to push and pull items weighing up to 100 lbs.
Possess familiarity with construction and maintenance in a marine environment.
Physical labor on construction sites; in maintenance shop with power tools and equipment; in lab spaces near sensitive research projects; in building utility spaces; outside in all types of weather; in proximity to hazardous chemicals. 40 hour work week, primarily 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, expect to be scheduled on weekends and/or holidays.
